I got some new taller shocks from Mikes. I kind of wish I hadn't now because I keep reading about how stiff the ride is going to be, but oh well.

I have a couple of questions regarding how these are installed. I didn't have the pleasure of taking the old ones off, but I do have a plastic bag marked "rear shocks" with the dome nuts, some thick washers, some thinner washers of the same diameter, and some rubber caps (not sure what these are for). Each of the new shocks comes with bushings and (plastic spacers??) of 3 different sizes and 4 washers. The rubber eyes from the old shocks have a metal bushing in the lower eye but not the top eye. So....do I use these plastic spacers inside of the new rubber bushings? I see from the parts diagram that I'm missing the lock washers for the top mount, so I'll get some of those.

Also, I tossed the grab rail, so what is the best option for modifying the mounting point? I can either cut the mount shorter and cut more threads, or I guess I could just put a stack of washers on there. I don't have the capability to fabricate a nice spacer.

As a followup, has anyone removed the "hood" piece that's on the top of the shocks Mikes sells? Its the part that corresponds to the chrome thing with the reflector on it on my stock units. I know they are removable from the stock ones, but wasn't sure about the new ones. Thanks!

I just installed some shocks from Mike's on my 77. I used the metal bushings from my old shocks on the bottom and just the rubber bushings on top. The thick metal washer goes on top with the acorn nut.

Personally, I wouldn't cut the mount. Use washers as spacers, might need the extra length in the future.

I'm always changing the back end around, sissy bar, grab rail, neither, etc.
