Not sure what your missing, seems to be enough numbers!
So it's a 1979 XS 650F Cobalt Blue......Standard (not a special)?
might not have enough numbers for a modern VIN
Never tried this site, check it out, might help:

Cheers

I have been involved in a few discussions on vin's lately.
It seems that the sources list the same numbers as different models.
Some will say your bike is a standard, some say special.
A few years really confuse things with a special II. The special II was a bike that used some standard parts and some special parts.
Good luck on your search.

I think regardless of what actual model designation it is, the issue is providing a VIN. As VIN's weren't introduced until 1981, your bike wont have one, they need 17 digits!
Yeah, the other link in the vault says it's a 1979 XS 650 SF, Special!
The 2FO is for a few years, the first 2 digits tell which is which!

Gents....Here's a likely scenario on this bike. Check the tag on the neck to determine date of manufacture. I have one myself with a 2FO113968
VIN which was sold as a 1978 XS650 SE
When it was sold and where it was sold will likely determine what the model year and model designation given to the relevant registrating agency might have been. Your bike looks to be a "Special" and was likely sold and titled as either a 1978 XS 650 SE or a 1979 XS 650 SF
By the way, take heart, mine "didn't exist" either as that model and VIN
number was never (according to the charts) made in the dark blue color as mine is.....ahem and ahem. Best of Luck, Blue
ps....if it has a handlebar on/off light switch it's probably a 78' SE. The
79 "2FO's" ie. SF's supposedly did not.

y '81 couldn't have been red according to the chart, but it's red and it says both red and 1981 on the title.

Does it have points or tci, if you need help figuring it out let us know. are there points under the covers on the end of the cam, is there a little black pickup on the stator under the large round cover held on w 2 screws on the left side. Stock tci also has 1 coil and points had 2coils.

FWIW......I have another ...a 79' XS650SF also a 2F0-161945 . Your's is sandwiched between the two VIN #'s and almost must be either a 78 SE or 79 SF.
Do you know in what state it was last registered or to whom? From your picture I think I can see the handlebar light switch and the short length of chrome strip on the front half side of the seat which also are characteristics of the 78' model. BTW....this model was often listed back in the day as: Model XS6 Type RS. Don't ask me why ????
While you're at it, check to see if the engine VIN # matches the frame. Let's hope so. It's stamped in the casting across the leading front face of the engine.
Sooner or later, you'll likely have to have some police officer verify the numbers you list to get a new title. Best of luck with this process. It's
always a giant PITA in my experience. Looks like you've also got a ways to go to pass inspection.

Makes it more confusing don't it
I have found discrepancies with the UK chart as i see it as well They have the XS2 as a 71 and the 5A9 as a CDI. the 5A9 is the Aus 81Special and that came out with points not CDI. Seems to be a lot of discrepancies. Here in Queensland Aus, the dealers got the C models painted red, other states were blue.
82yamsp650, i would use the frame no and then your bike will be a one off. Worth a lot more

well i talked to the dmv and its gonna cost me 440 to get it road worthy (ouch) but hell ifs a rare bike then i might as well restore it as much as possible and look into it more to see how rare it really is

Good bike, nice find, worth the fee's to catch up and set right but.....
as the first year Special was quite popular, a market success and not that rare (so to speak). Love mine as do many. BOL, Blue

A 78 Special.................oh yeah, that's likely the best year for these bikes. All the improvements made by then but before Yamaha got crazy with EPA carbs and dumb interlocks. But then I do own one.
