Pumps, I've painted a few disc centres before, There's a paint product called steel for wheels, made for painting steel rims. It comes in a nice gold that would go well with the gold on your colour scheme! I know it probably sounds a bit loud, but it really is a great colour (the silver is also quite tasteful), like stock later model brembo ect discs. Can also paint the rear sprocket the same colour, can look good!
The seal is just a dust seal, and yours looks ok from the pick anyway! Probably re-use it if you wanted!
I'm sure you've seen in the pictorial in the vault where he puts a piece of pvc pipe inside to keep the grease volume down! Looks like a good idea!
also make sure you blank off the down tubes if they aren't already, apparently some are some aren't. Don't want to be pumping in 5 tubes of grease!
All looking good so far, well done!

Where do I get Steel for wheels? No results on google. I'll give it a look. The gold you refer to is the gold in the stock decals correct?
My dust seal is toast. Rotted out.
I did see Gorans pvc pipe...wonder what size? Got some left over from the pipe I buried to get power to the barn.somewhere..I'll check to see if my downtubes are blocked off. If they are open how do I block them off? JBWeld or something?

Sorry mate, might have been my mistake, or an ancient product, one or the other! What I found in the shed was "Dupli Color High Performance Wheel Coating, with improved resistance to brake dust, chemicals, solvents, heat & chipping. Restores original wheel appearance. Highly reflective metalic." The colour I was refering to is Bronze! The silver is a cool colour also. No way would the "bronze" be a match for you tank ect, just would be keeping with the theme. (just my opinion of course, maybe I've no taste at all!)
It is great quality paint and gives a real pro finish! When done it looks just like a disc on a modern sports bike!
JB weld shuld be fine if the tube ends are exposed.
Not sure on the PVC, you'd have to just trial what you've got!
Have you tried MMM or Yamaha for the seal?
Anyway, great work so far, I'm sure you'll work it all out, cheers.

I see 650central has the seal. Hate to pay shipping on just that though. Might try the local stealership just in case and I do have one more place that has it.

Pumps, Your rubber seal that sets below the lower bearing on the stem, If not damaged can be reused. It just keeps most of the dust and water out of the bearing.
On the headlight ears, the rubber rings are a square sectioned o ring. I think that any o ring that fits over the fork tube will work. Maybe two, they just keep the parts from rattling.

wouldn't that keep the inside of the frame from rusting?

And what about vibration dampening?
Got my little parts this afternoon at the local dealer for $10. The seal and the dust cover. They actually had them. Must be used on some other newer stuff.

I put on the new lower seal. Test fitted the lower bearing..that sucker won't go all the way down on the stem unless I press it on or maybe it will press down as I tighten it on the bike? Should I emery cloth the stem to make it slide on easier? The old lower part of the lower one was tight enough I had to tap it off. Funny the upper part of the lower one fits loose......

I'm going lots of different directions here. I wanted a newer right side engine cover with a sight glass so I bought one off ebay. It has some gouges in it from the brake pedal that I've almost got removed. Been sanding and filing my ass off. Shoulda brought my dremel in to work but rode the Ninja so I forgot. Anyways I removed the sight glass. There is a thing on the inside of the glass that is like a keeper? that I had to pry out and then put a piece of cardboard as a cushion over the glass. A 15mm socket on an extension , a hammer and a buddy to hold it while I beat it out. The glass only came out, the metal seal was a booger to pry out. Same with the shifter seal.

The glass I managed to wipe clean and clear but the associated seals etc will have to be replaced. I'll order them eventually. Learning lots here.
Hey on the grease fitting on the steering stem what should be the placement?

Rotor turned and painted.
Still working on the fork lowers and top triple tree. Taking the front wheel to work with me tomorrow. Going to see what I can do with it.

pumps,
Getting back to the oil level sight glass.....I have one on my '81/H, of course.....never use it. You have to get down on you hands and knees to see it, and it's inaccurate. Also, you can't see fresh oil. Total waste of effort on the part of Yamaha.

cpotts- the IAFF group has something about they prefer you should ride North American and union made...Frankly I'm not a big group joiner and they are particular about how their colors are handled which is their right. A buddy of mine won't join because he says You start wearing colors and you're playing the game. I'm not interested in wearing colors.
On another note, the sidecover thing is a long term goal.I had the drive gears apart but didn't have my impact driver to get the pump cover off so it'll have to wait. We'll see how it comes along. Dropped off my top triple and fork lowers to the coolest old guy to get polished. He's been polishing 51 yrs. Today I'm removing clear coat from my front rim and is my arm tired!0000 steel wool. I have the rain gutter rims and am wondering how to get the pits out of the gutters? The clear coat I can remove but I'm thinking all I can do is sand the pits out?
Trying to get another order list figured out. Met a young fellow on here. Chef tay who lives locally , works close to me, and is working on a 71? The gold model. Good kid. Likes the old XSs. Good looking old bike. I'll get a picture of our bikes together when I get on the road again.

5twins- followed the example in your picture and got a fitting drilled and tapped today.
Picked up parts from a very interesting older fellow who does polishing. He has a neat collection of old signage etc. in his shop that he allowed me to get in pictures.

Shiny bits.
Now figure out where all the parts go and get the damn rim done.

Ok so I've got my front rim cleaned up. Before I put it on I'd like to do some general bearing maintenance/replacement. I've no way to know if these bearings have ever been serviced. It's sort of important to me that the front wheel not lock up while I'm riding. I've looked on mikes and I see one bearing and seal for each side. Should that be good enough? Or is there something else I should replace?
One other question I have is that my rims are pitted and have some gouges. Someday I think I'd like to respoke the wheels and get new rims. On mikes site what is like what I have which are what my neighbor who is an old flat tracker calls rain gutter rims.

Slowly re-assembling. As I put this back together my memory is a bit foggy. Shoulda taken more pics as I took it apart. Does the front brake bracket bolt go in the right as viewed from the front with the pin going in the left hole and the bottom bracket for the headlight mounts like this? I want to repaint these but want to make sure before hand . Also on the headlight bracket are some rubbers bushing thingies-(grommets yeah)-that are sort of deteriorated. I'd like to replace them.
