What kind of paint did you use on your tank? I have been contemplating using Columbia Coating's chrome powdercoat to get a finish like that.

its just bare metal with two coats of krylon clear. i dont recommend using any can for the clear. mines starting to gel where the gas drops touches it. im gonna strip it down again and polish this winter and i will use automotive clear next time and shoot it from a gun (laquer based like PPG). i like the bare metal look. methinks its quite hot roddish.

beauty of a bike. really dig it. i'm keeping the pics as some inspiration for my soon to be build-up. I'm working on a cafe as well. in fact, when i bought the bike, it had already been tricked out a bit (top end rebuild, nixed airbox, pod filters...). a few questions:

what front/rear turn signals are you using? (where'd you get em?)
are those clubmans from mikes? (look frickin' awesome)
tail light?
rear disc conversion? painful?

i also dig the rainbows exhaust pipes. nice offset to a bad-ass looking 650. definitely like the overall design meng.

thanks cafe shop...il look into that clear powdercoat. that actually sounds like amazing stuff.

xsiv,
turns signals were off the shelf from a local moto guzzi dealer. i beleive its your standard aftermarket mini turns. the clubmans are not from mikes. i did order a set from there but i did not like the way it looked. i picked these babies up from a local salvage yard and cleaned them up. i took them off an old dirtbike(late 60's to early 70's). i just turned them upside down and turned them around. taillight came off of a modern r1 sportbike. rear disc is pretty much stock other than a brake rebuild. also the same stock headers. i love the blue petina on them so i decided to keep em. me thinks its pretty hotroddish too.
thanks all

If imitation is the highest form of praise, prepare to be praised. I just bought a 77-XS750 tank to do the same trick you did. What kind of nightmare am I looking at to mount this beast? Any help would be much appreciated.

That is a pretty killer tank. I would use it. Does anybody know a good online site that sells aftermarket tanks. The stock 650 tank is more a chopper style tank (teardrop) than a cafe, and I'm working on a cafe. Any options?

cafe...
i had to grind off original tank rubber moutings ears off the frame and used metal lag bolts to mount the new rubber directly onto the frame for the tank to sit onto. at the rear i used a quick release pin type bolt setup straight through the flat area of the frame to hold both the new seat pan and the tank. pretty simple and effective. you shouldnt have a difficult time.

xsiv...
bought the tank at a local salvage yard. you could always find some on ebay. fiberglass tanks are quite pricey. you can pretty much find any tank and mount it to your frame with a little clever planning. just google "cafe racer tank" and youll find several. a direct bolt on would be from omars. he offers a couple of them.

She is nice looking, I am running the tank from 1974 cb550 I cut the rear mount of my stock tank and tacked it to the cb550 tank, after I gound down the stock rear setup from the cb tank. I ground of the cups from the front of the frame and am in the process of mounting the rubber cups to the newly ground gussets at the head section. The tank holds 4.5 with .5 gallon reserve gravity feed petcock and found a cool set of glass fuel filters from royal enfield. I was fortunate I had the seta pan froma tx750 that I cut and welded to fit snug up to the new tank. always looking for new ideas thanks
P.S. if you are looking for a very nice tank try "The tank shop" it is online they are in scotland and make alloy reproductions of some very nice tanks. they will custom fit so you know there are no issues I can get you web address if need be.

Cheers
Kyle

Great looking bike. If it was mine I would be looking at lean mixture because of the blue pipes. Nice clean looks. John Underwood

nah never posted it on 650motorcycles.
thanks to all your replies. im still working out some rearsets and a few odds and ends but overall its there. im just happy its finally together and on the road. its quite a head turner though. the blue pipes came with the bike so it was from the stock set up. its actually my favorite part of the bike. i like the blue petina. i dont know why.

Just saw the post on 650 motorcycles very nice but I prefer the pics you have here. I am always looking to see what people did. I love details. That's what makes a bike is the details. I am still going to put some pics up sporty I just got the frame back clean and black. I finished fitting the tank and have started to assemble the front end. I should have a rolling stock shortly. good time to send a few snaps.

How is that seat working out?

Oh, and thanks for the info.

Have your bare metal tank clear powder coated.

That's how the pros do it and it will last forever.

Automotive clear on metal will eventually peel and or bubble.
