Mine did the same thing - sanding lasts a couple of miles - disk or pad - New pads were the only thing to get rid of it.

when I fit new pads, I
1: remove callipers, remove old pads
2: put a piece of wood between the pistons (slightly thiner than 2 badly worn pads and a disk) this prevents pistons popping out
3: pull brake lever to push pistons out beyond there usual limit
4: clean and polish pistons-and calliper
5: spray pistons with silcone spray
6: push pistons back in, gently
7: apply anti seize to contact areas on new pads and pistons (dont get silicne spray or never sieze on any other bits!!!!)
8: put it all back together, check brake fluid, check calliper bolts tight!
9: pump up brake lever
works a treat, good luck

update.: seem the beltsander trick actuall worked....BUT...i know now while the squeal came back so suddenly and worse than b4. there is a pad lock/locator screw on the back of the caliper that vibrated out ( wut a shock screews vibrating loose onna xs650) LOL fortunately i have an on box of assorted hardware frm the dozen xs400 i owned back in the day. no caliper screws, but a few correct sized screws. spinning one in a drill with a good file, i pointed the end to match the screw i lost. i belt sanded all 4 pads once again. picked the two thickest pads for the front. only squeal i get now is at very low speed braking WOOOOO HOOOO!!!!

Need slotted rotors or lots of holes.....brakes will get a "lot" better and the squeeks will be gone.......
XS1100 front on the front
XS850 front on the rear (if you have disc on the back)

I had squeaking brakes. Drilled the front and rear rotors and installed new pads..............problem solved and much better braking.

Did you drill the disc yourself or take it somewhere? I could use a little better performance from my brakes and drilling the rotor seems a good idea.

I just used my own drill press............use sharp bits and drill smaller pilot holes first.............and use a slow speed on the drill press.

Actually use the proper speed(see chart). Center punch the locations, clamp the disc and drill a small pilot hole in each location followed by the larger hole. Lubricate the bit and counterbore when you are done to remove burrs. All it takes is time and maybe a few bits.

Thank you to you both of you. I will try this out. I was a little concerned with warping the disc but it doesn't sound like that will be an issue if I'm careful and do it right.

I've read many places not to chamfer ... to just clean up. The sharp edge of the holes is what cleans the pads.

No chamfer can stress crack. Sharp edges are bad. I was of the opinion the holes allowed the gas to vent which allows the pads to better contact the disk. But I could be wrong.

kingwj; Actually the speed I used on my drill press was around 250 to 300 RPM, with cutting oil and works well. The disk does not get warm and will not warp. My understanding is best to leave the sharp edges on the holes to clean the pads.

most squeeling occurs from the back of the pad, where it contacts the piston. is worth lubing those contact areas as i said earlier, cheers
