Finally finished this:
1977 XS650D, 707cc kit, Omar's pipes, CB500T tank, Omar's seat/tail, new bearings and seals throughout, etc. Have ridden it about 35 miles so far. No noises, no leaks, Runs great, lots-O-fun!! Took about 9 months out of my life....

VERY NICE. really like the pipes. I should think for 9 months that was very good like your own child hell women go 9 months.

Hi Jim, very nice job on your cycle. What is the front fender off, does Omar's rear fender/seat fit over the rear frame loop, or did you have to chop it off. I'm building my own 77D into something similar, but it sure is going to take longer than 9 months, more like a long term project. John

Yes, very nice. The more I see that Honda tank on these bikes, the more I like it. But we need more details. It appears you flattened a portion of the rear brake torque arm? Is that for wide tire clearance? And the custom side covers ..... they just screw on somehow?

Way cool, Jimio! What tires are you running? I like the rear's tread pattern -- it fits the cafe racer look, I think.

I am very intererested to know if your inner thigh gets warm at all?

I like long rides, and worry that the heat may cause comfort problems...

Very nice work and attention to detail. I was thinking very similarly on my project. I really like the side covers.

Did you get the exhaust and port optimizers with the exhaust? How does it run?

Sorry, been away for a day or so... Anyway, the pipes are Omar's, he's very proud of them and I think they are $445.00. I bought the Optimizers for them as well. Another $90.00... Runs real nice. Smooth power curve. I wish I had a dyno to compare but it FEELS good! Leg doesn't begin to warm up. Some of that may be attributable to the Jet-Hot coating.
The rear brake arm is stock from an 80's Special. I was worried about tire clearance, wasn't sure which size I would run.
The side plates are flat aluminum. They are attached to the factory battery box. There are three 6mm holes on each side. One hole on each side required a spacer to bring it up to the same plane.
The fender is from an 80's Virago 920. Had to move the holes a little.
Completely rewired the bike. Installed a very small battery in the existing tray. Managed to hide everything back up in there. Ignition/stator/rotor is from an 80's Special. No electric start. Never more than two kicks to fire it up. Requires a pretty healthy jump!
The rear loop is uncut and is up under the tail. I could have dropped the seat another 3/4" or so, but the way the tank mounted it lined up better this way. CB500T tank uses stock Honda front mounts on relocated frame studs. Rear mount has a stock 650 tank mount welded to the stock Honda mount with some reinforcing.
Seat is hard as a rock-my only complaint with anything from Omar's. May have to deal with that.....
Weather turned poopy this weekend. So no riding for me. (NE Ohio)
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this here, but I have Wiseco 707 cc kits avalable comp 9.2:1, 750 kits available comp 9.6:1, very early 750 kits too, 80 and 81 mm comp 10:1. Kits have the oversized head gasket and base gasket included.

nice work.

if your battery is to small, it will begin to brake down from over charging. you will notice the bike starts stalling at lower rpm's. will seem like carb problem, but actually the battery is dying, from over charging. this is from experience i speak. also if the airfilters are the cheap emgo brand, they have a flange inside the rubber boot that will block off the air inlet for the cv diaphram and the idle jet circuit. you can trim the flange for clearance, but i recommend using k & n or uni filters.

Battery is about 1/2 the physical size of the original battery. I'll keep an eye on it-Thanks. Yes, the filters are the cheapie Emgo type. I already 'sculpted' the air inlet areas. Bike is jetted just slightly rich, and I'm replacing these filters with oval K&Ns anyway, so maybe that will correct the jetting as well! Here's the left plug with about 35 miles on it, after about a tenth of a mile just off idle going up my driveway:

Oh forgot to tell you about the seat. High quality (green) carpet padding works great to replace the omar pad, very comfortable but still firm enough
