It all depends on what you're into.
I'm still searching for the right setup myself.

They cost a little more, but the cafe fender I have from Omars is NICE. It's very heavy fiberglass and will not need reinforcing as some do. It also comes with a nice seat pad, so you don't have to fab/buy that. Taking all that into consideration, it's well worth the extra coin.

Scotts, did you mount the cafe seat yet? I am going to buy one from Omars, but am wondering how it all fits.
When you do post some pics

Wow, nice bike. Not mine, though...I don't have my seat mounted yet. I'll be sure to document the procedure when I do.

Here's a picture of the gas tank for this. From a 1975 Honda CB500T. The seat brackets are welded in on top of the original frame rails. Started it up yesterday. Sounds nice.

LOVE THE TANK BUT I ALSO RUN A CB500T TANK ON MY CAFE THE ONLY THING I DON'T LIKE ABOUT IT IS THE CLOSENESS OF THE PETCOCK AND THE CARBS. PAIN TO GET IN AND SHUT OFF THE FUEL IF I WANT TO.
ANY PICS OF THE FINISHED BIKE?

I used a petcock from a 76 CB550K that works fine. Has two outlets on it. No problem to operate it. Tank and seat are sitting in the paint booth still. I did a temporary wiring job to hook up the ignition plus an IV bottle to feed it gas. Basically wiring is all I have left to do to finish up. I have a 707 cc kit on it. Takes a pretty good push to kick it over...

IF IT'S THAT MUCH TO KICK YOU MIGHT WANT TO UPGRADE THE KICKER WITH THE POPSICLE IF YOU LOOK IN MY GALLERY YOU WILL SEE THE CONVERSION. THE NEW KICKER IS THE SIZE OF MY HEAL AND SUCH A DIFFERENCE. MORE SOLID FEEL KICKING IT.

Hotwings seats sit on the frame rails of the XS650, not over them. So if you don't want the top of the frame to show, you might want to choose another.
Cyclesurvival1 (eBay ID) sells a bum-stop style seat that is wide enough to fit over the frame.
Best,
ichael

Dan,
Did you use a tracker-style seat, or the road-race/bumstop seats? There's another member here who bought a hotwings tracker-style seat that isn't wide enough to fit over the rails.
Best,
ichael

you guys ever check out www.clubmanracing.com
If you click on cafe parts, then featherbed they have some nice seats in there
The frame loop is the obstacle on these bikes and limits our seating choice unless we lop it off!!

Hi, I'm new to this site. It was hard to get registered but with Gerald's help it works. As far as "best" seat tail combinations go I guess it depends on a person's individual tastes. There's something that I want to try for a cafe racer that I'm going to build and I think it will look great. I bought this real cool fibreglass Benelli tank from Italy. The bottom doesn't fit an XS650 frame so my plans are to make a mold of the tanks top and a mold of the XS650 tanks bottom out of fibreglass, pop out a few copies of each and join the two together. Then I'm going to make a seat pan out of sheet metal that will just hide the frame rail. For the tail section I'm going to find an old bullet type headlight from a 1936ish car like a Dodge (had one but threw it out before I got the bike - "you know"). Then I plan to cut the old headlight pod almost in half lengthwise, weld it up to the seat pan, make a mold of that and produce it in fibreglass. All electrics will be under the tail section. Then if it works and looks good I'll be able to offer the whole bolt on set up to other people who might like one. Also I think I'll put a recess of about 1/8" on the side/upper front about 2 1/8" in diameter for a round Yamaha tuning fork badge. I'm going to try to put a picture of a tank like mine (not mine) on here if it will work.

OK. It looks like the picture went on here. One at a time? Here's another of the view from the top. I don't really care for the seat/tail section on this particular bike and I'm trying to imagine it with my headlite pod idea with a shorter seat and no fairing. Also in candy gold (like a '71 XS 650) and a chrome (painted chrome with Alsa chrome paint) frame.

The Omars seat has been mounted and I covered it in this thread: www.650rider.com/index...pic&t=3095
However, since I used the XS750 tank, I had to modify the way it mounts vs. the way Omars tells you to. Using a factory tank it should be a near bolt on deal.
