i rode my 78 xs650 se alittle hard today. it was near 90 degrees out and i did somehighway cruising at 80 somtimes a bit higher and when i got back into town it didn't want to stay idleing and seemed to have more engine noise. what is a realistic cruising speed that's not hard on my engine?

depends on your gearing and how good (fresh) your oil is, mine cruises at 65 at 4000 17/31 gearing keep in mind that CV carbs don't use the high speed (main) jets until the 5000rpm range so if you want to run/cruise at those speeds gear for it

In hot weather the cylinders get too hot.........The difference in temperature between 55 and 65 mph on mine is amazing......

I would think you should realistically be able to run 65-70mph all day long. Maybe you can't, but I would sure try. With Johns cooler, you could probably run like you did. Remember, the smaller the motor, the harder is has to work at a given speed versus a bigger bike.

You can run 65 all day.....But on those 90 degree days the cylinders will get real hot.......How hot before problems.......Last summer I found out......They were getting 265 degrees.......This summer my goal was 250 degrees max........Had to tune to 2 heat ranges hotter plug to reduce the temps.......

Okay, begs the question.. Can you run a moly/teflon additive like Slick 50 in the bike? Anyone doing this?
Some bikes with wet clutches have a problem with it.

Did try Valvoline 100% synthetic .....Did run good.....measured temps and didn't see any reduction......clutch acted better....$5.50 a quart....
Read about the slick 50.......most engineers say it is a ruse........Be pretty expensive if one changed the oil at 1000 like they should.......
The top end cooler keeps the head temps down good......if someone could figure how to water cool the cylinders....that would be great.......
just take it easy on those dog days if that is possible is the only answer I guess........
