83 650 Heritage Special, winter plans have been: high bars, open pipes, custom rear fender, replace a bad oil seal or 2 (yippy), and a new paint job for the spring.

Hey Russo, beautiful bike. Nice look with the tank and seat and the risers and bars are great. Are the risers aftermarket Harley? Any mods needed to make them work? Givin' me ideas here since I can't seem to find the bars I like.

Grant, ya killin' me with the '97 Harley. Cool paint job. I was riding a 84 FXR for about 8 months. (another story behind that one) I'm dyin' to build my own ground up custom V twin. One day, one day. (keep tellin' myself that) My other motto and I'm thinking of having a shirt made up with it is..
If YOU didn't chop it, it ain't YOUR chopper!
Yeah, it's an in your face kinda thing for all the damn wannabees with more money than sense and NO fuckin' clue to what a biker really is. Ok, off my soap box now.

Hey Flavaz33, welcome to the board. Great ideas, just remember you may have to change the jetting on your carbs by going to open pipes or you may find the power wasn't what it used to be and add a couple of free flowing air filters from MikesXS to complete your package. Good luck on the project and post some pics to show off your efforts. Look forward to seeing them.

Hey Russo, thanks for the links. Checked them out and I'll let you know. Just out of curiousity, what did you pick your risers and bars up for? Kinda give me an idea of how much sidework I've gotta do.

Thanks Russo, I'll check it out and let ya know. Just constantly looking for ideas. I can't stand the damn pullback on the stock bars on my 83. Been thinkin' 'bout z-bars and the risers would give me the height I want. Still looking forward to the info on the forward controls.

Hey Flavaz33, no problem, just glad to help. I was facing the same situation in my planning stage for my Heritage untill I hit on a really sweet deal a couple of weeks ago. One of my customers who used to be a tech at the local HD shop just happened to have a brand new, never had gas in 'em set of the vm 36mm Mikuni's with pod filters and throttle cables. He picked 'em up in a swap for a 650 he was gonna build for his wife but never came to be. These things go for 400.00 online and I picked them up for 210. They come prejetted for the 650 so problem solved and now I don't have to overhaul the originals although they were in pretty decent shape outside of the jets being a bit gummed up from sittin' for a couple of years. I also picked up a brand new, never had gas in it coffin tank from him for 100.00 including a chrome gas cap. Hell, the cap alone had to be ordered from England and cost 30.00 by itself. BTW, get your airfilters before the jetting job. Let us know how it goes. Ride safe.

I agree with wulf if you didnt chop it it aint your chopper.
I currently have a 2004 yamaha 650 star classic with a lot of
home built parts. crash bars back rest and a bunch of stainless parts.
also two 80 650s one in mock up for a 205/50r15 tire hardtail.
with 40 deg rake. the other is undecided. but I like the yellow chopper in wulfs pics. it may end up like that.
previous rides were 82 v45 magna.
72 sporty.
assorted three wheelers and dirtbikes.
1guess for now I am just looking to build something unique
you see too many harleys riding around everyone has one
and anyone can have a custom built but
I like the built not bought theory.

I rode a friend of mine's Sportster yesterday. He just installed a great set of apehangers on his that I've got to get for mine. Just the perfect rise and look that I want.

Currently on the road is my 82' XS650 Heritage Special. All Black. Got it in boxes as it was taken apart by previous owners cause of electrical problems with the main fuse blowin all the time.. and it sat in his barn for a few years to the elements. Mice made there home in the air filter boxes that is after widening the inlet holes..
I just picked up a 81' XJ 650 Maxim that needs some work on the carbs as they are foulin the plugs, compression is good, mufflers both got holes under them from rust, even got about a quart of bird seed out of the air filter box!! Seems the mice were using that for there storage. Glad i looked in there before I cranked her over. It's fully dressed with a Vetter windshield and hard bags. Although the bags are in good shape they are old and they did not think "water seal" too well when they were made.. lol
Working on restoring my first bike I had when I was a kid. A 67' Honda SL 160 Scrambler. It still runs great and I ride it around the yard every now and then.
Use to have a 70' Yamaha 250 also when I ws a kid. What a screamer that was in the dirt..
Went into the service in the 70's and well, been away from the bikes for a while but startin to get back to riding now ..

I currently have a 79 XS650 with XS750 gas tank, clip on handle bars, and custom cafe racer style seat (I just finished last night).
Still to be added to it are the 36mm mukini carbs. I'm putting those on after I get the new exhaust for it. I only want to do the rejetting joy one time. ha. I'm also getting some custom triple trees done so I can put the front end off a zx1000 on it. I should have the triple trees back in a week or two.
Still thinking about replacing the rear swingarm with something a little stiffer.
(sure it would be cheaper and probably better to just buy something new, but I'm enjoying the creation process)
Previously owned:
87 GSXR750
91 EX500
73 CB500

I have a pair of XS650's, a 1977D and a 1981H, both are in original factory condition. I have a 2003 Yamaha V-Star that I bought to use as an everyday rider, a 1970 Rupp mini, and a 1979 Honda PA50 that were my daughter's when they were new. I also have a 1979 Kawasaki KZ750 twin that is original but needs restored and might be my next project.
