I put my forks back together today but now I noticed on the second fork that when I slide the damper rod down and it is sticking out the end of the fork leg, there is a lot of side to side play (1/4 inch or so). I'm not sure if that is normal, but I didn't notice it when I put the first side together. Then I noticed that there is some kind of internal collar about 1.5" up the bottom of the fork leg that is cracked in several places, which I'm guessing is what's causing the movement.
Anybody have any advice? Whatever piece that is up inside the fork isn't shown on any diagram I have, and I don't have any hope of just replacing that piece. So, should I just start looking for a new fork tube?
