I know that there have been some discussions of this here, but in trying to replace a missing tool kit, I winder if this is a good place to start:

It seems a bit pricey until you think about buying things individually. Has anyone seen things like this at local auto stores? My local MC shop never stocks little niceties like this; they always tell you they can order it for you. Heck... I can do that myself!

Well, just my opinion, you only need the tools your going to use!
My road bike isn't an XS however!
for me that means a set of metric sockets up to 12mm, allen keys I have a set of std L shape & a set that adapt onto 1/4 drive to go with the sockets. 2x10, 12, 14mm spanners, spark plug socket (does the one in the kit fit your plugs) & a spanner for the rear axle so you can adjust the chain. Screwdrivers I use same as the allen keys that go on the socket adapter + a combi screwdriver. I used to carry tyre repair gear & some CO2 shots, though after I carried them for 5 years without using them I ditched them. A points file would be a good addition for those with points.
A few cable ties & a half used roll of duct tape.
The cable ties & tape would be the most commonly used out of my kit, by me & the guys I ride with, probably pulled other blokes out of the poo 3 or 4 times more than myself! Next in line would be the allen keys, screwdrivers & 10mm spanners, in that order!
A leatherman always comes in handy too!

On my ...old pieces of...I mean vintage bikes ( not the Ninjette) that I'd like to take a tool kit with I have a little bag I strap on the back. Along with extra fuses, black tape and a few other things I take this little kit with me. Truly you can take as little or as much as you want along out of it but I just take the whole thing PLUs a few things. Price is right too.

Good suggestions, guys! I suppose I was hoping to make the selection process easier... but we see how that worked out.

A small can of tire sealant and spare headlight/taillight bulbs.

Enough cash for a couple of six packs. I've been fortunate enough someone offers tools and maybe a place to park if I need a trailer.
Most times they appreciate the brew for their trouble.
