Since I'm making very little progress on my 83 XS650 Bobber build due to little time and even less money, I'm still in the planning stages for a heap of parts sitting in the garage.
I want to paint the motor and then powder coat the side covers. Black and silver color scheme (may not score high on originality but it's what I like).
Stock colors for this motor seem to be black for the cases and silver for the cylinders and heads.
I've gotten most of the PO's black paint off the cylinders and heads thanks to the pressure washer and degreaser.
Figured that black on the cylinders (maybe heads too) would help with keeping engine temps down a bit and really make the stainless and chrome fasteners stand out.
Here's a pic of a motor I did for a Sportster a while back.
Looking for advice on what you fellas think.
Pictures of 650 motors would help too!
Thanks in advance!

I just finished painting my engine but haven't done the case covers yet.

Should you worry about paint acting as a thermal barrier with these engines being air cooled, just a though. Carry on...

From some of what I have been reading, a coat of paint can increase the cooling. Some thing about an increase of heat transfer from metal to paint to air is faster than from metal to air.

I don't sweat stuff like that. It isn't going to make a hill of beans difference. Every new air cooled motor is painted. I know there are some that believe this but I just don't buy it.

I was just wondering for myself on the cooling, I do sweat stuff like that. It looks great on it I do admit you are doing a fine job on it.

I have been told from a few sources that the black paint helps the heat transfer.
This is one of the reasons they paint radiators black.
Supposedly light colors and chrome reflect heat back inside.

The searches I'm coming up with are leading me to believe that black paint will absorb heat from the engine like black surfaces absorb heat anywhere and a bright surface will not absorb heat as quickly. If it absorbs heat it must let go of heat or it will eventually become an unbalanced equation. I know some of the xs's stock had black motors what part was black stock, barrels and case , I think? was it a gloss black or flat black stock? I think a black engine will be a bit cooler :?: .
Lets see some pics of color schemes on the engines.
I have too much time on my hands

Just paint it and don't worry about it

I just feel like sometimes "we" as a community tend to overthink things. Like I said earlier, I just can't believe it would make enough difference to matter.

Some heat is removed by thermal transfer to the air, and bare aluminum has the best properties of just about anything besides copper/gold/etc when it comes to this. Some heat is also emitted as infrared radiation, which is where the black color would help you. The best of both worlds is an anodized black finish, which is very very thin so the coating doesn't act like an insulator trapping the heat. Plenty of computer heat sinks are anodized black.
You can buy rattle can paints specifically designed for radiators. If you spray those conservatively, I don't think you'll have any problems with heat. They'll probably also stick to aluminum better than cheap paint.

Hi there,
I like the look of your engine. I am restoring a 1977 XS 650D right now and am trying to figure out what to do with my engine.
Did you take the engine apart before painting it? What kind of paint exactly did you use? Except for cleaning do you have to prep the engine before painting?
Thanks for the info.
