Last night I tried to pull the cap off the CAM chain adjuster and I think too much came out. The entire shaft (black) unscrewed. I put it back for another day. But I have a noise, like a playing card in a spoke, coming from the top of the engine. I think it's the CAM chain. So I need to adjust it soon.
I think the lock nut just came with the cap and all I have to do is hold the lock nut. Does this procedure sound right? And does a loose CAM chain sound like a card in bicycle spokes?
Thanks

I too have an 83, also recently picked up a ping-ing like sound. Not constant, but it will ping a little then quiet a couple seconds and do it again. I tried adjusting the tensioner a while back and didnt make much difference- I'm thinkin i didnt adjust it enough, or it just needs a good oil change. I think you have to loosen the lock nut a little to adjust the screw, but im not a 100% sure. I just followed the steps in my repair manual, but my Q is turning the screw which way tightens and which was loosens the tensioner?

In to tighten, out to loosen. Don't try to eliminate noise by overtightening. Affirmative--locknut must be loosened. Check valve clearances and have a look arond for loose fasteners--you may have a vibration rattle masquerading as engine noise.
