new member with carb question

I have a 73 tx650 with the stock carbs, I can get it running ok after cleaning them out but it's not long before I'm cleaning them out again. Are they worn out or is this the way all carbs are? I have filters inline. I want to buy mikunis from 650 central but only to keep from tearing carbs apart all the time. Can someone tell me if new Mikunis are as prone to gunking up as the old carbs. BTW one of the stock carbs has a pinhole in the diaphram, I'd rather spend money on new carbs than put a high price diaphram in an old carb that might need replacing anyway. Thanks in advance.

small changes in the gap makes a pretty big difference too. If you need it to move more advanced try the high end of the range (I think it's .16?) or if you need to retard it try .12

Re: Backfire - Quickfix?

90 percent of the time deceleration back fire is caused by a too much of a lean mixture, which you need to rejet and/or caused by an exhaust leak. Try looking around your pipes to see if there are any cracks or if a muffler is not on correctly. Next, check your head gaskets, these get jacked over time.
I have the same issue, I need to beef up my gas intake, but I am going to wait until i get my XS cone filters to replace my WT velocity stacks to do it right.

Re: Kimberly

No probs, guys. I battle what I call "selective dyslexia", which usually manages to rear its ugly head at the most embarrassing moment possible. I've always preferred the term 'cast' as opposed to 'mag', which I'll admit is less common, but it is the more precise usage. And, since you asked . . .

<linguist hat on>

There is a general, although far from universal, rule regarding the use of comparative and superlative adjectives (comparative adjectives use 'more' or the '-er' ending, superlatives use 'most' or the '-est' ending). The general rule is that if the word is one syllable, '-er' or '-est' is added. Words of two syllables can go either way, although one of the two ways is usually preferable and varies on a case-by-case basis (see my usage of 'more precise' above -- 'preciser' works but sounds strange, doesn't it?). Words of more than two syllables always get 'more' or 'most' instead of the '-er' or '-est' endings. In the specific case of 'clear', one often hears 'more clear' instead of 'clearer' simply because of the double 'r' ending. 'Clearer' is correct, but 'more clear' is very common, as are both 'clearest' and 'most clear.'

<linguist hat off>

Hope y'all get your wheel swappage done without problems

Best,

I just used my own drill press............use sharp bits and drill smaller pilot holes first.............and use a slow speed on the drill press.

Actually use the proper speed(see chart). Center punch the locations, clamp the disc and drill a small pilot hole in each location followed by the larger hole. Lubricate the bit and counterbore when you are done to remove burrs. All it takes is time and maybe a few bits.
