52F here today in Sunny South Carolina. Put on my long Johns, boots, gloves, helmet liner and most importantly.....my new silk scarf that my wife got me for Christmas. Rode the '81/H down to the super market to stock up on wine as they do not sell it here on the Sabbath. The windshield protects me from the wind, so it was a pleasant ride.
I used to use 40F as my thresh hold for pain, but it has gone up 1 degree each year for the past 12 years. Easier on the engine as well.
Since I removed the oil screen bypass and plugged it with a stud, I have to be careful when I start the engine in cold weather. The oil pressure would climb to 20 PSI plus if I don't throttle back and keep it between 12 and 15 PSI. But, for the rest of you, I can tell you for sure that your oil screen bypass opens when you start the engine with the temperature below about 60F. So, throttle back to less than 1500 RPM or risk having unfiltered oil going into the innards of your engine.
Probably a good idea to change to 10W40 in the winter as well. I stay with 20W50 because I can see the oil pressure dropping when the engine warms up and I don't ride the bike until the pressure gets below 10 PSI. Eventually on a cold day, the pressure drops to the same as a warm day with 20W50.

So, Pete,
I was reading your post and wondering how you could be cold at 52 degrees, and realized the problem---put some jeans on over those long johns, and some sort of warm shirt, and a jacket, and you'll be ever so much more comfy......
Good info about warming the engine, and winter oil. I have to drain the oil out of Jaelith if I can get her warm enough for the oil to flow....it's 28F out right now, and that's kinda chilly, even for a mighty XS! Hopefully it will warm up a bit as the day progresses....
I hope everyone had a great Christmas, and just a little reminder that the uniformed minions of the Law are out in force on New Years....be careful!

Still cold here but not too cold for the guys. Lately they have been making themselves at home in the woods behind the house. It always kills me because I have friends who are turkey hunters and they bitch about not even being able to get one to come in close with a turkey call. I could probably sit out in the back yard with a shotgun and a white sheet over me and get myself a few if I was so inclined.
I counted eight.
