I'm building a vintage roadracer for track day playing. It's still early but am nearly through with the final mock-up. I started with a 1983 Special, stripped it to the frame, rebuilt the wheels as 18" with Avon sprint tires, dual drilled front disks, rebuilt the forks and added cartridge emulators, air assist and fork brace, changed the bearings and bushings. The swing arm was replaced with one from a TX750 for strength, rear upper shock mounts were moved forward to raise the rear and improve wheel travel. I'm having a pair of Fox Air Shox being rebuilt that will go on soon. I have an XS750 tank, racing seat and cut down R6 fairing that will go to the painter soon to get sprayed with the '70's Yamaha yellow/back racing theme. Just mounted the Raask rearsets, but waiting on a piece for the brakes to come in.

After I finish the chassis, I will start on the motor. It gets Mike's big fin 750 cylinder with Shell 11:1 pistons, Shell #1 cam, ported head, total loss ignition, 34mm Mikuni round slide carbs, and better clutch plates actuated by a hydraulic mechanism. I'm still waiting to see what Mike comes out with on the 2-1 header he's building. I plan on a 2-1 header feeding into a Shell megaphone, just to look and sound cool.

It should be a fun ride and quick but not fast enough to terrify me. Some pictures in my gallery.

Color scheme is classic '70's Yamaha racing (back when I raced). The seat is waiting for the pad to come in, but the padding will still be minimal. I don't expect to ride long at a time on this, just a track bike. If it goes as fast as I hope, a short ride will be enough ........

The pipe is a homemade concoction. I used a MAC 2-1 header, cut off the 2" collector and welded in a shorter 1-3/4" collector pipe, then added a Shell megaphone. I haven't started it yet, but expect good things.

I cut the oil feed line and connected the input/output hoses to the two ends. Look up the posts by XS John here, that's how I did it.

Very cool Dwyatt Very Happy

I am working on a project that will be a cafe w/ one tank-seat combination and a tracker with another. I have some pictures in my gallery.

Have a couple ?'s

1. What yellow did you use? It looks very similar to the old 70's yellow they raced with and I would like to use something like that on my tracker tank and seat.

2. What tires and sizes did you use?

3. With what looks like increased rear ride height, do you have any problem with the chain contacting the swingarm at the pivot, and if so, what have you done to solve the conflict?

Thanks and sending updates. Good looking project!

I'm out of the country right now, but have emailed my wife for the paint color/brand and should be able to get back to you very soon on that. It was a readily available color/brand from an autoparts store, automotive grade paint. I never could find out exactly what Yamaha used back in the '70s, but this is very close.

I'm running Avons, front - AM22 110/80-18, rear - AM23 130/650-18.

I haven't put the chain and sprockets on yet. I'll generally be running an 18 tooth front, which will raise the 520 chain up a little, but my guess right now is that I will need a chain tensioner, like on 1970's MX bikes that slanted the rear shocks like I did here. I'm hoping this will be a minor issue as I didn't move the rear mount too much.

Nearly ready to start it up. Chassis is all but complete. Due to the new shock angle, I have to add a chain tensioner. I got one from an old YZ and will have to weld on a mounting bracket when I get home. The gas petcocks hit the new 36mm flat slide carbs, so am waiting for adapters to come in for down pointing petcocks to go on. No spark right now, so have to chase through the electrical system then should be good to go.

I have an extra head that will be going to Craig Weeks for porting, then will clean it up and put in new valves. Finally decided on the Shell 700cc pistons but still debating the 40/50 Megacycle cam. Hope to have all the motor goodies in and assembled by end of the year. If I can get the bugger to start soon, I can start sorting out the suspension and running gear.

Looking the goods mate, well done!
I do recommend air filters though. Originaly I ran stacks, that was until I pulled my engine down and noticed all the scoring going on! Switched to K&N's, power is still fine!

What & where is your battery? You still going total loss?

Rock on!

No full faring, just this section, didn't want to hide that sweet motor. Been thinking about the filters, will probably snag some K&N's soon, but the velocity stacks look good in the garage. I'm running a TLI, just don't have the battery in right now. I'll hook the battery back up once I get the wiring sorted out. Thought I had it but no damned spark, probably just my kill switch. Once I finish all the little things in there, I'm going to get a smaller, sealed battery and mount it back in the normal place.

This last days off was mostly about the flat slide Mikunis, rum and chain/sprockets. Ran out of time and had to go back to work, only 20 more days until days off again......

Cool! I was going to suggest maybe a lanyard type kill switch might be the go?
Should be able to just disconnect the kill switch and that should take it out of the equation. Of course don't start it with no kill switch in case of run aways! (I did that once with a fresh motor in a IT 250. It had a vaccum leak and started reving its tits off. Couldn't stop it till the carb ran outa juice, which leaned it out further, reving higher. Oh well it was run in after that!) Plus wasn't game enough to grab the plug lead!

Some guys I race with, use cordless drill batteries for their TLI's. Snap 1 in while the other is on charge. Swap them over each event! Just an idea, might work for you?

Cheers

I've been getting a lot of questions on the fairing. I got it off eBay from a wrecked 1999 Yamaha R6 racer (top part only). I patched the fiberglass, trimmed it to the lines I wanted, painted it with automotive paint and made mounting brackets from alumium strap from Home Depot.
