hello all
i m a newbie with a 72 xs and just bought a new battery, but when i shut the engine off, the voltage drops or drains out very quick as seen on my external voltagemeter. then when i jumpstart it
it may fire once byitself.
any ideas ?

your voltage rectifier/regulator is probably bad, allowing battery to drain down, check a Haynes manual for the tests recitifer most likely, it's a 3 phase diode bridge probably bleeding back to ground it's under your battery box, black red and white wires

You should be able to unplug those, and see if that is where your drain is coming from. Does the bike charge properly once it is running?

I wouldn't think it was a bad rectifier/regulator then. Look for something grounded out, shorted. Does your bike have more than one fuse? You can try pulling the fuses out if it does, and see which one stops the drain.

Another thought.. does the battery drain when it's disconnected from the bike? Could be an internal short (bad battery).

jayel, you re hinting in the right direction !
the rectifier, not a original xs part, definately works, and
when i disconnect the cable from the alternator, the battery keeps the charge.
i m guessing a short along the cable or in the alternator.
thanks for all your help guys, this is a great site !
